How can a charity make a film on their phone? In these unprecedented times, charities across the world are having to make impossible decisions about service delivery, staffing and funding. Now more than ever, it is imperative that charities continue to connect with supporters. Let them know that you are in this together, how you are continuing to deliver your vital service, and what your needs are to be able to do that.
We think that the most powerful and effective way to do that is through video. There are some charities who are doing this brilliantly and for very little cost. How can a charity make a film on a phone? Here are our top 5 (in no particular order).

The Cathedral Archer Project, a homeless charity, are a great example of how a video can connect on a much deeper level than a text statement from a CEO. The tone feels urgent and the ask is bold but in this climate, it needs to be!
This inspiring international charity used a recorded video chat between UK staff and a staff member ‘in the field’ in Nepal to really bring to life what impact this is having on the ground. For those charities who are worried that supporters in the UK might not feel the urge to donate to international aid charities, this is proof of the opposite!
An honest, raw and ‘real’ update from a youth homeless charity support worker. This is a great example of how charity can make a film on a phone. This video is simple and effective at communicating to supporters how staff are reacting to the Coronavirus outbreak. No big comm’s budget required.
Don’t be afraid to ask your supporters, beneficiaries, trustees, volunteers and staff to get involved with video content. A video like the one recorded on a smartphone by Dreams Come True beneficiary makes the connection so much more authentic and genuine.
Keeping it short and sweet but still managing to connect with supporters. The Red Hen Project use a simple smartphone video to shout-out to a business supporter. We love how happy and upbeat they are, despite the circumstances.
Video doesn’t need to be overproduced with fancy graphics, it just needs to feel real and authentic. Get your smartphone, record some content and get sharing!
